Outlaw killed in Jhenidah ‘shootout’

A leader of outlawed Gono Mukti Fouj was killed in a ‘shootout’ between his cohorts and police in Shailokupa upazila of Jhenidah early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Gias Uddin, 38, son of Afjal Khan of Baroihuda village in Shailokupa upazila.

Gias was the second-in-command of the outlawed party, reports our Jhenidah correspondent.

Officer-in-charge Anwar Hossain of Shailokupa Police Station said some operatives of Gono Mukti Fouj, led by top cadre Shuknal, was holding a clandestine meeting in a field of Bagura village.

On information, police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the outlaws opened fire, prompting them to fire back.

At one stage, the criminals managed to flee the scene.

Later, the bullet-hit body of Gias Uddin was found on the spot, the OC said adding that Gias was rushed to Shailokupa upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.

At least 40 rounds of bullet were exchanged during the gunfight.

A case was filed with the police in this connection and the body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police also recovered two guns and three rounds of bullets from the spot.

Gias Uddin was an accused of seven cases, including murders, police said.

The OC said after serving about 20 years imprisonment in separate cases, Gias was released about two years back.

Soon after he was released from jail, he got involved with robberies, lootings, killings and other anti-social activities in Jhenaidah and the neighbouring Magura district, he added.

Bangladesh target Pakistan upset

Bangladesh's captain and coach, Shakib Al Hasan and Jamie Siddons, are targeting a victory against Pakistan in their opening game of the ICC World Twenty20 on May 1.

"I think there is a possibility for us to beat Pakistan because, at the moment, Pakistan cricket is unsettled with different kinds of crisis and injury problems," Shakib said in Mirpur, prior to the team's departure. "So we have to do something in the first match if we want to play the second round, but that doesn't mean we play bad cricket against other group opponents Australia."

Siddons also felt Pakistan was Bangladesh's best chance but said they would have to play sharp cricket nonetheless. "Both Pakistan and Australia are tough opponents but realistically we have a chance against Pakistan but in that case we need to play well," he said. "The preparation is good and I must say it was much better than the last occasion. The players got the opportunity to play two tournaments - PCL and NCL - recently, which is really good. Some players missed out on runs but I think the wicket was low and slow. But definitely the boys will get consistent pace while playing in Barbados."

Bangladesh had a poor World Twenty20 in England in 2009, getting eliminated in the first round after losing group matches to India and Ireland. Shakib, however, was also pleased with his team's preparation this time. "Nothing could have been better than playing matches before any tournament. I think our preparation is good this time and most importantly we have been playing good cricket for last few months and hope it will continue in West Indies and as well as in the England tour."

England beat Bangladesh by 7 wickets

World Twenty20 preparations with a comfortable seven-wicket victory at the Kensington Oval.

England 127 for 3 (Bopara 62) and beat Bangladesh 126 for 7 (Yardy 3-20) by seven wickets, Cricinfo reports.

The left-arm spinner Michael Yardy was the star of the show with 3 for 20 in his four overs, before Ravi Bopara marked his return to the national side with a calm 62 from 48 balls, to seal the contest with 17 balls to spare.

Having recently completed their Bangladesh tour, England knew exactly what to expect from their opponents, and were rarely less than in control of the contest - even though they started a touch sloppily.

Imrul Kayes slammed his second ball of the innings from James Anderson over midwicket for six, only to be reprieved by Stuart Broad in the same over.

Broad then overstepped as Mohammad Ashraful top-edged a pull to be caught by the wicketkeeper, Craig Kieswetter, but Kayes fell soon afterwards, caught at third man off Anderson for 14, before the introduction of the spinners cemented England's dominance.

Yardy claimed his first international wicket for almost three years when Ashraful was caught down the leg-side, and he doubled his tally as Aftab Ahmed holed out to Tim Bresnan for 8.

In his next over, Shakib Al Hasan was bowled for 7, and when Mushfiqur Rahim was crassly run out for 2, the backbone of the innings had been broken, even though Mahmudullah hung around for a useful 38 not out from 31 balls.

The run-chase was launched by two Twenty20 debutants, Kieswetter and Michael Lumb, who are set to be England's 16th opening pairing in 26 matches when their tournament proper gets underway against West Indies on Monday. Lumb, however, wasn't able to mark his moment in style - he reached 8 from 10 balls before carving Syed Rasel to point.

Kieswetter gave a hint of the fireworks that could follow later in the competition when he blazed a massive six over the imposing 3Ws stand, but on 22 he was bowled neck and crop by a ripper from Shakib that lured him down the track and spun viciously past his flailing bat.

But Bopara and the captain Paul Collingwood guarded against any mishaps in a dominant but measured third-wicket stand of 71 in 56 balls. The only anticlimax from England's point of view came when Bopara ran himself out with the scores level, but by then the job had been done.
